Head for the Museu de Arte Moderna - it is located at the northern end of Parque do Flamengo. I found out that it burned down in 1978, after a devastating fire but now it is restored and houses 11000 permanent works including pieces by well known Brazilian artists. There are interesting temporary exhibitions displaying photography and design work. The museum's cinema hosts film festivals, check the website for details- www.mamrio.org.br.
