Well the City Bus has hundreds of lines and every bus has its destination written on the front and on the side and if you see a bus useful for you, stick your arm straight out and hail it. In Rio buses don't stop unless someone hail them. About the tour on yourself, the most useful lines for tourists are running between Leblon and Copacabana. Most bus fares are around 0.75 US dollars. I don't recommend you take a bus to suburban areas and don't travel by night. Also always watch your belongings while traveling by bus in Rio.
