claire's question:
I am about to visit Sao Paulo soon, but shame on me, I don't know too much about it, about its history. is there anyone willing to cast some light here?(give a different answer) .
The first colonial settlement in the area was Sao Vicente on the coast, near today's port of Santos, founded in 1532. Later in 1554, 2 Jesuit priests from Sao Vicente, founded Sao Paulo as a colegio, a combined mission and school. They choosed the island wishing to distance from the Bahia's civil authority. also from there it was easier for Indians to convert to Catholicism. Between 1885 and the end of the century the boom in coffee and the arrival of throng of Europeans transformed the state out of all recognition.
